Great Grandpa Larsen turned 84 on March 10th. He and Great Grandma came to Sunday dinner at Darwin and Debbie's to celebrate. It was good to see them and I love that our boys get to make some memories with them. I have a picture of me with one of my great grandmas when I was small, but I don't have any real memories with any of them.
I copied Alan's cousin Lindsy, and tried something new for St. Patrick's Day this year. The note says, "It looks like a Leprechaun was looking for some gold! Let's see if we can fill up this jar for him and maybe he'll come get it and leave us a special treat on St. Patrick's Day! Every time you do a secret service for someone, leave a piece of gold for them (from the cup on the counter). Then they can put the gold in the jar for the Leprechaun!" I tried being a good example and getting every one excited about it, but maybe I didn't try hard enough because no got into it and we ended the week with just a few gold coins in the jar. I'll try again next year!
Mason had fun searching for gold coins in a bin of split green peas for Mommy school. He loved it so much that I still have the bin out and he plays with it several times a week. He loves using small construction trucks in it.
St. Patrick's Day was on a Saturday this year so we ran the Luckython to celebrate. Alan made a hilarious leprechaun!
Mason likes riding in the stroller for the most part. At about 40 lbs, he is getting really heavy to push up hills though! He's not going to fit in the stroller for much longer. :(
5k Finishers!
We have been having family movie nights on a lot of Saturday nights lately. I usually just pick up a kids video that we haven't seen from the library. We hardly ever go to the movie theater (Mason has never been!), so this is fun and free way to see movies. Just 4-5 months late!
Kiki always jumps on Spencer or I as soon as we sit down. She doesn't like Mason's wiggles and grabbiness and she knows better than to even try to snuggle up to Alan! Haha!

Mason at 3.5
Mason turned 3 and a half in March and even though he tries my patience sometimes, he also makes me laugh A LOT. Mason finds so much joy in life and it's hard to get too serious with him around. He is such a fun, little buddy to have home all day. He has been anti-pictures for the most party lately though, so I don't have too many for this post. :)
Mason loves people and always wants someone to play with him. He and I spend a lot of time playing cars, pretending, and reading books. After being with me all day, Mason especially loves playing with Spencer and Alan when they come home. He craves our attention and does not like to play by himself. There is a big difference in his behavior on the days I can sit down and really play with him for awhile and the days I can't. Mason also loves to talk and is full of constant questions wherever we are. It's rather draining for me, but maybe it's a good thing that he stretches me out of my introverted and introspective self!
Like most little boys, Mason has a natural tendency towards fighting bad guys. He loves swords, sticks, and anything that can be turned into a weapon. I often find him with a sword in hand and a sheath stuck in his pants or underwear. Haha! He also loves vehicles and has taken over most of Spencer's "Car's eye guys." (Spencer still keeps a few special ones in his room and plays with them fairly often!) Mason also really loves playing outside and we try to get out every afternoon that it's not too wet. He loves mud, puddles, rocks, smashing bugs, and just running around.
Three is such a fun age for being silly! Mason love, loves silly stuff and has the best belly laughs over it. We found some America's Funniest Home Videos of people falling into the water the other day and he laughed and laughed over it. We have found that coming up with a silly game is the best way to end a power struggle with Mason.
Mason's favorite food is bread - bagels, French bread, rolls, biscuits, cereal, etc. He eats cheese, most fruits, peas, and bell peppers well, but a lot of other things are a struggle. Excluding junk food of course! There is definitely no pickiness there!
Mason is still sleeping in his crib! We have a toddler bed in the garage and he asks when he can sleep in it all the time, but I know getting him to stay in bed is going to be tricky so I'm keeping him in his crib as a long as possible. He still naps for 1.5 hours every afternoon and I think that will end once we move him to a big boy bed. Nap time is the only time I can sit at my computer and get any of that kind of work done during the day so I'm not looking forward to giving it up. I'm sure it won't be too much longer until we make that big switch though.
Mason has been doing pretty well with in his Sunbeam class at Church. For some reason, he prefers to sit in the very back of the room by himself instead of with his class during sharing time, but I think he stays in his seat pretty well now. It has been hard for him not to have me in Primary anymore, but he does ok as long as he doesn't see me at all. I accidentally saw him in the hall last Sunday and it took me 10 minutes to calm him down and get him back into his classroom.
I love writing these posts because they make me reflect on all of the reasons I love my boys. Sometimes the days are long and tedious, but I love staying home with Mason so much and wouldn't trade this time for anything!

OBOB 2018
Spencer was excited to participate in Oregon's Battle of the Books again this year and I was happy to be able to coach his team again. Spencer read all of the 16 books at least twice and I enjoyed reading ten of them with him. Spencer's team consisted of two girls and another boy from his class. One of the girls was one his team last year as well. Mr. Bahns, Spencer's teacher, heads up OBOB for the whole school and is very supportive of the kids in his class participating. He allowed me to meet with the team during their independent reading time each week which worked out really well because Alan was usually home for lunch during that time and could keep Mason home.
The battles at Edy Ridge took place during the last week of February. There were 28 teams this year, a big jump over the 19 Edy Ridge had last year! The competition was a lot more stiff and some of the battles were really intense. The Bookinators did awesome though and finished the week as the school champions again!
Winning the school battles, meant the Bookinators got to go to the regional competition in St. Helens the following Saturday. Last year, there were 68 teams at Regionals and it was so chaotic! They divided our region this year though so there were only 21 teams. SO much better!
They got creamed during their first battle and I thought we would be going home after the four pool play battles, but they made it into the Elite 8 and got to stay for the tournament after lunch. The battles got really intense, but these kids just kept working hard and wound up taking 2nd place to the team that had beat them so badly during the very first battle of the day! Even though only the top team got to go to State, I was really proud of them! It took a lot of studying and hard work to make it that far.
Go Bookinators!
Spencer loved every minute of the competition and would love to participate in OBOB next year too. Unfortunately, I don't feel that one of the books they have chosen for next year is appropriate for 8-10 year-olds so he may not be able to participate. Our school district is currently discussing whether or not they will be including the book and participating in regionals next year so we're awaiting their decision before we make ours. That's the price we pay for living in such a liberal state I guess. :(
