January

January is always a very blah month for me and this year was worse than usual. I didn't take many pictures so this post will be short.

New Year's Day Sunday walk with my favorites. We have a route we do every Sunday afternoon when the weather is decent. This was the first time we were able to go in awhile and it was nice.

Mason really likes swinging but still struggles with pumping his legs. He still wants me to push him to get him started. I don't really mind.

We made vision boards for the first time this year. Alan and I had a hard time finishing ours, but the boys did great. I don't know how motivational they're going to be for our year (apparently eating lots of dessert is Spencer's top priority! Haha!), but it was still fun to do.

Why not wear your spiderman costume to the library on a random day in January?!

Mason didn't want to try basketball this year so we signed him up for swimming lessons in Newberg instead. He goes every Friday evening for 45 minutes. This is the only picture I've taken though because his class practices too far from the spectator seats and I can't get a good picture. He's loving it though and is making some good progress.

Sunday selfie while Alan was out of town. Winter time is indoor track season and since Spokane is the closest place with an indoor facility, Alan has to travel there quite a bit. Thankfully his company flies him there and back so it's only an hour flight instead of a seven hour drive. He only went three times this year which is better than last, but they were always Thursday-Sunday trips and it still seemed like a lot. I'm glad Alan doesn't have to travel like that year round.

MLK Day bike ride. Don't let those shorts fool you, it was still quite cold and I was dressed way warmer than the rest of my family. ;) We rode on a new trail that connects Stella Olsen Park to the highway and it was really pretty. It will be even better when it's warmer though.

Mason really wanted to do an adventure challenge when we finished our bike ride so we wound up doing a blindfolded obstacle course through our living room. It was pretty funny to watch everyone stumble around.

Mason got his first pair of tie shoes in November but the laces were almost too short for Alan and I to even tie and it was Christmas time by the time I got new laces ordered. We finally buckled down and taught Mason how to tie in January. He did great and picked it up really quickly! We still need to work on double knots, but he has the basics down. Way to go Mason!

I took a short online photography class in January and got motivated to practice for a few days at least. It's hard when I'm stuck inside shooting in the same places all the time. At least Mason dug out the old car track that he hasn't played with in years though.

Spencer was required to play in the pep band for five basketball games as part of his grade for band. He loved it so much that he played at every home game (10 in all) though. I didn't actually go to any games because most of them conflicted with Mason's swim lessons, but a professional photographer shared these images for free. Spencer is loving band and the friends he has made there.

Silly dress ups:

Our public library always does a reading challenge over winter break. They do a prize drawing at the end for everyone that participated and Mason won! He got to pick a Lego book from a whole shelf of cool books. Mason was super happy! Spencer was bummed because he never won a thing for all of the years he participated in the challenge. ;)

The End (of our trip and the year!)

Katelyn and Zac's family and Jordan had to leave the day after Christmas but we got to stay for a few more days.

Token picture of me to prove I was really there. ;)

More disc golf:

Trying out the awesome King's Court game Lindsey and Jordan created and gave us for Christmas since you can't buy the original anymore.

Skipping rocks on the ice at Lyman Lake. Marc was the only one brave/crazy enough to get out on the ice. Mason probably would have if we had let him though. Ha!

We also did a short hike to see these petroglyphs. I had never seen them before!

Dad fanning himself and Lindsey with his granola box. Lindsey was running hot because she was so pregnant. Dad has been on testosterone blockers for his prostate cancer for awhile and they make him have miserable hot/cold flashes. That granola box was his best friend while we were there. :)

Christmas toys!

Saying goodbye to Michelle. I don't know why I didn't get a picture with my parents too. Goodbyes are the worst especially when you don't have plans to see each other again like this year. :(

We hit our worst snow on this trip ever between Sanders and Gallup. The roads got slick a ways out of Sanders so we decided to stick to the freeway through Gallup and Colorado instead of the back roads we usually take through Chinle. The freeway was so slick though and there were tons of cars off the road. It took us at least an hour to go the 10ish miles before Gallup. Things improved until northern Utah after that though. We spent a quick night at Katelyn and Zac's house before getting started again and hit some more snow around Tremonton, but it wasn't too bad and we made it safely home in two days.

Our New Year's Eve was low-key as usual since we had just returned the night before. We had a chacuterrie style dinner and played a few rounds of Beat That (minute-to-win-it games all prepped and in a box). It was easy and fun.

I began 2022 with so much hope for an adoption. We were just about ready to start our contract with Faithful Adoption Consults and I was excited about the possibilities. After a whole year of ups and downs (some bigger disappointments than others), I'm so emotionally exhausted and not sure how much more hope I can muster for the next six months. We decided to re-sign a six month contract with FAC to take us through June when our home study expires. After that, we will probably be all finished trying to adopt and accepting a "no" answer after the strong impressions I've had that there is another child waiting to come to our home is going to be really difficult. I'm not very good at living in the moment and hoping for this big miracle at the same time, but I'm trying.
