July Round-up

Mason was my good yard helper.

I offered to pay Spencer $1/lb to help me pick berries early one morning. I regretted that offer though when I had to pay him $16! We went a little crazy with blue berries and Marion berries, but they were SO good! Nothing better than fresh Oregon berries.

Scott, Dani, Ryan, and Kaylee came for a visit after the reunion. They spent a few days at the beach, then we got to hang out with them at parks, and had them over for a bbq. We hope they will still be able to visit in the summers after they move to Albuquerque.

Mason outgrew the bike trailer we used last summer, so we decided to get this new toy so we could keep riding as a family. It's not a good picture, but it's just a small bike that hooks onto the back of mine to become a tandem bike. Mason was super wobbly at first and it was really hard to ride, but he got the hang of it in about a week and we spent the rest of the summer riding all over town. Great purchase for us!

Mason and I had a "date" one evening while Alan was working and Spencer was at a cub scout activity. We took Jimmy Johns sandwiches to a park we just discovered this summer. He is such a fun, creative, little buddy!

These boys have loved the new trampoline!

We were in town for the Robin Hood Festival this year! Alan had a race, but Spencer, Mason, and I road bikes to the parade and the festival. Mason LOVED the parade and they both probably collected five lbs. of candy! After the parade, we ate a picnic lunch by the library, then walked over to the festival. The boys liked watching Robin Hood and His Merry Men sword fight and they each got to choose a souvenir. Spencer chose an amethyst crystal and Mason chose a geode. It was fun to break it open and see white crystals inside.

Alan took the boys camping towards the end of July since they were not able to attend the Father's and Son's Outing this year. They went to a fun campground called Scott's Mills down near Corvallis. They had a ton of fun doing all sorts of activities. It was Mason's first time camping (since he was 10 months old) and he loved it so much! I'm so grateful for the amazing dad Alan is!

As the Scoutmaster in our ward, Alan needed to go on the High Adventure with the scouts. Spencer isn't technically old enough to go, but since several boys dropped out a week before the hike, Alan got special permission to take Spencer. The plan was to hike Eagle Cap in eastern Oregon. I was a little nervous about sending Spencer last minute like that because he didn't go on any of the practice hikes and had never hiked with a pack before. Alan knew it would be hard for him, but was confident that Spencer could do it.

The hike began with 15 men and boys all in one group on Monday afternoon. The trail was longer and more difficult than any of the leaders anticipated and by the end of the second day, they were split into four different groups. One boy got sick and had to be taken back to base camp. Another dad and son got separated from the group and took a wrong turn. They eventually wound up back at base camp as well. The first day was extremely difficult for Spencer because the pack he was wearing was way too big. He did better after he and Alan switched packs the second day, but was still very tired and getting a bit of altitude sickness by the afternoon. Alan and Spencer made the decision to start back to base camp after summiting a peak and seeing the narrow, steep trail on the edge of a cliff on the other side. It took them the rest of Tuesday and most of Wednesday to get back to base camp. Alan figured they hiked about 22 miles which I think is pretty awesome for an 11-year-old with very little hiking experience!

Once back at base camp, they got to spend the next two days swimming in the lake, playing frisbee golf and Uno, and having a great time! When the rest of the group made it back on Friday night, they explained that the rest of the hike had been very difficult and they never made it to the summit of Eagle Cap. Despite that, I think it was a good experience for the boys. They developed deeper relationships, supported each other, and learned that they can do hard things. Spencer was glad he went even though he didn't complete the hike. I think it was a really good bonding experience for he and Alan.

Mason and I had a fun and long week at home without Alan and Spencer. He had swimming lessons every day and we took a day trip to Neskowin one day. It was super windy by in the little river, but was nice right behind the big rock. It was a fun day and I was amazed that I didn't even get a migraine!

June

The problem with getting so behind on my blog is that I forget important details. I'm going to do my best to catch up and remember the awesome, funny things that happened over the last three months.

Mason got to take his first soccer clinic in June. It was the perfect, low-key way for him to try the sport out. He did great and had so much fun the first couple of Saturday classes, but then started refusing to play. Preferring instead to play on the sidelines or cling to my legs. I guess he's not ready to sign up for rec soccer yet, and that is great with me!

Early June is strawberry season for us. Since Spencer is still in school, Mason is my picking buddy. We always pick and eat until we are about sick. :)

Last day of school for this handsome bus driver!

Last day of school for this handsome 5th grader. Spence was a little sad to see school end, but Mason wasn't!

5th Grade Promotion! In our district, middle school is for 6th-8th grade, so Spencer is officially finished with elementary school. So weird. If I felt old when he started kindergarten, I really feel old now! Spencer was recognized for serving as an Edy Ambassador this year. Helping with specific tasks around the school all year was really good for him.

Officially a middle-schooler!

Spencer had a great year with his teacher, Mrs. DeGregorio. She was great to challenge him in lots of areas. He had such a great elementary school experience that he really was sad to see it end. And I'm sad that my little boy is growing up.

The last day of school was just a half-day so we celebrated by having the first picnic of the year in our backyard. Mason had fun with the little pool too.

Father's Day 2019. Someone was a little grumpy and anti-picture. Haha!

Mason jumped right into swimming lessons after school got out. He loves to swim!

There's a fun, new playground next to the pool. Thankfully, Mason wasn't seriously injured when he flew off the merry-go-round!

Spencer went to a basketball camp most of the days Mason had swim lessons. He had a lot of fun with that.

When some friends were selling a big trampoline for only $75, I couldn't resist and we bought it for the boys in hopes that it would give them something fun to do together over the summer. It worked and they had a great time together on it. It was definitely worth the money!

Nothing says summer like running through the sprinkler!

Ahhh! I love it when these two read together!

We took a picnic to Snyder Park one evening. I love this view! We are so lucky to live in such a gorgeous place!

Another beautiful evening, we took a walk in The Refuge.

I love the smell of these red currants and I love Oregon summers!
